Welcome to Snakewater Farms

Thank you for your interest in Snakewater Farms. We have been raising the rare color of   champagne since 1996 and have been breeding Champagnes to Champagnes since 2001. This gene has only recently been documented and is uniquely distinctive. The gene dilutes red into gold and black into a liver or chocolate. In addition the coat has a bright metallic sheen due to the hair shaft structure. A DNA test for the Champagne gene has recently been developed by the University of Kentucky.  We made significant contributions to both the University of Kentucky and to VetGen of Ann Arbor MI for their DNA research.  We are unique in being able to provide samples of several generations of the same Champagne lineage. Since we believe we own the largest herd of champagne Quarter Horses, we are also the only breeding farm that consistently offers  homozygous champagnes.  We  currently have 5 Champagne stallions, 7 Champagne mares and 3 fillies in our breeding herd.  In addition there are 3 Champagne yearlings, and 11 Champagne weanlings.  Pictures of our Champagnes have been published in Horse and Rider magazine and the Finnish book 'Hevosen Varit" (Horse Colors) by Johanna Viitanen.

Snakewater Farms has sold horses all over the United States, from Washington to Florida, California to Pennsylvania. This is all by word of mouth and Internet advertising. We have had an international sales with a colt to France and have pending sales to Holland.  Every year we get inquiries from other countries such as Canada, Australia, France and other parts of Europe. Quite often our clients buy a horse and quickly find other people offering to purchase them. Many times they have resold the horse for double or triple what they paid.

Snakewater Farms can ship semen. Our first shipment resulted in a healthy foal from one insemination. Our goal is to produce foals that have bone, muscle, balance and a sound mind. We look at the whole picture and not just the rare champagne color.  Several of our foals have gone on to be shown in reining, barrel racing, trail and pleasure. Most clients are buying for breeding to start their own champagne herd.

We now stand five Champagne stallions:

'SW Champagne King' is an AQHA Amber Homozygous Champagne.  He is 93% FQHA.  King is the first AQHA Homozygous champagne tested by U of KY in their research. Like his sire SW Take Care Too, King is a well balanced and well muscled build. With his calm and easy going nature he is very easy to train and is a joy to be around. His first foals will be on the ground in 2009.

'Taylor Made Champagne' is an APHA Homozygous Tobiano Gold Champagne.  Taylor came to us from Shari Beymer of Beymer Paints in Iowa. I just loved his great grand dam, Peponita Poco Lass. She was a great roping horse in her youth and produces outstanding foals. Taylor's grandsire, Hesa Blue Champagne is also a great roping and ranch horse. I have followed Taylor's whole line for several generations. They all have been exceptional in every way. His first foals will be on the ground in 2009.

Our foundation stallion is 'SW Take Care Too', an amber champagne. He is 88% NFQHA and 93% FQHA. He is a true bulldog foundation type and will put muscle and bone substance on his foals. The feedback from our clients will often state on the great minds of his foals. I cross him on the lighter boned and muscled mares. The results are what I call a good all around pleasure performance type. They have a great profile and balance. They are taller and have refinement but are built for hard riding. When crossed on a foundation mare, you often get a very thick built, muscular horse that looks like they can be used for roping bulls. Since he is such a good mind, I will often cross him on “hot” mares that are sensitive.

'Cool Looking TC' is our junior stallion, a gold champagne. He is a grandson of My Skip Vanzi, who was third in the world in aged stallions. He does not have Impressive breeding. TC is also more of a darker skinned champagne and tends to pass that to his foals. It was his colt that was shipped to France to become a herd sire. This stallion has a large hip that really ties down low. He has a good set of withers, a long neck, a pretty head and stands about 15.2. He placed third as a weanling in a South Dakota futurity. His sire is now in AZ producing halter foals. When bred to my halter mare, they produced a real popping filly. He is more of a refined type of stallion and also crosses very well with old foundation bulldog types. An added bonus is that TC has an outstanding trot. He moves softly with a lot of sweep in his reach and drive. One look at him moving and you know that he will be smooth as glass to ride. There is a sale pending to Holland for Cool Looking TC.

'SW Champagne Artist' is a gold overo APHA stallion. He is OLW negative. His first foal is a loud red roan overo colt out of a Breeding Stock mare. His sire is SW Take Care Too. He is the spitting image of his sire in mind and body type, very cowy and foundation looking. He is a loud sabino overo and according to APHA’s research should produce the paint gene 78% of the time.

If you have any questions about our horses or breeding to a champagne stallion, please feel free to ask us anything. We can give you an idea of what color of foal your mare and one of our stallions will produce. If you are looking for a champagne, we can help you find one.

                                    Take care,
